Sideline and Competitive seasons are two, separate seasons. Each require a tryout.
Sideline Cheer takes place during football season. We cheer at all football games, participate in school spirit activities, build team rapport, and develop strong skills for competitive season.
Competitive Cheer takes place during the winter season and is an officially mandated MHSAA sport. We cheer at select basketball games and compete in about 9-13 competitions depending on team placement. Middle School teams usually participate in around 4-5 competitions.
We hope the following answers may help, if you have additional questions please contact your coach or Erynn Pauli/Christie Desano, the heads of the program, at [email protected]/[email protected].
HOW DO YOU PLACE TEAMS?
We take a lot into consideration when placing teams. We use a spreadsheet system where tumbling skills, vocals, motions, flexibility and jumps are evaluated. No one category is more important than another. This process ensures that athletes have the ability to showcase their strengths. Attitude, work ethic and academics are also considered when placing teams.
CAN FRESHMAN MAKE VARSITY?
The Oxford cheer program will not consider freshman for the Varsity team for Sideline Season. We WILL consider freshman for competitive IF they have a high enough score and an exceptional attitude. We will only consider freshman that participated in Sideline season for Varsity Competitive Cheer. Freshman being place on any Varsity team is a rare and special circumstance.
WILL YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND ON TEAM PLACEMENTS?
Team placements are final. The Head Coach may decide to bring athletes up to a higher level team during a season, if a special circumstance arises. During team placements we will notify all athletes of what they can improve on in order to make a higher team during next season's tryouts.
IS CAMP MANDATORY?
Camp is an amazing experience for the athletes to bond and learn new skills that will be used throughout the season. It is not mandatory, however, it is HIGHLY encouraged. Remember, much of what we use in a season originates from the camp experience. Missing this experience will leave an athlete at a disadvantage and may leave them with gaps in their knowledge.
IS CHEER EXPENSIVE?
Like most sports, cheerleading has financial obligations. Camp, shoes, poms, practice clothes, etc. A detailed cost list will be handed out at the parent meeting. If you have any concerns in this area, please ask your head coach for options. We never want to loose an athlete due to financial issues!
WHO DO I CONTACT WITH ISSUES?
Contacting your direct coach would be the best way to solve an issue. If your issue is still not resolved- please contact the Head Coach for the sport, Coach Pauli. If your issue is still not resolved please contact the Athletic Director, Cole Andrews.
